Rayovac Celebrates Earth Day

- 4/18/2012

Importance of using and recycling recharging batteries emphasized

MADISON, Wisconsin, April 18, 2012 – With costs seeming to rise everywhere around us, it’s important to try to save money in as many places as possible. But with Earth Day approaching, many consumers also want to do what they can to help the environment, which is not always an easy feat while also trying to save money. Luckily, Rayovac rechargeable batteries help the consumer save green by being green.

Lifetime Value

Rayovac rechargeable batteries are a great value for high drain devices used every day, such as a wireless computer mouse, video game controllers and digital cameras. While the cost of rechargeable batteries is greater upfront, the value is evident even as soon as a year after the initial purchase.

Less money, less waste

The added benefit on top of saving you money is saving the environment by throwing away less waste. The EPA estimates that more than 2.5 billion alkaline batteries – in addition to the packaging that contains them – are thrown away each year in the United States. Buying rechargeable batteries means fewer batteries purchased and less waste deposited in landfills.

In addition, a 2007 study done by European Battery Company UNIROSS found that rechargeable batteries have up to 32 times less impact on the environment than disposable batteries based on 5 key indicators. Rechargeable batteries also have 30 times less impact on ozone pollution and 12 times less potential impact on water pollution than normal disposable batteries.

While disposal regulations vary between states, the EPA suggests that rechargeable batteries be recycled when possible due to their heavy metal content and ability to be broken down and remade into working batteries. This includes rechargeable batteries made from Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion), and Small Sealed Lead (Pb).

Contact your local government first to find out if a drop-off location exists near you. In addition, a battery retailer near you, such as Batteries Plus, may collect rechargeable batteries for recycling. If not, hold onto your used batteries until a household hazardous waste collection event is held and drop them off there. For more information about recycling and disposing of batteries, visit
